Hokitika Kindergarten and Playgroups Visit Eels and Join Tapestry Heke!

Ceridwyn’s kindies as well as a local play group will be learning to sew (with the help of copious amounts of fabric glue) while studying all the life that should be found in the streams alongside the tuna.

Today they heard the story of Velvet, the mommy eel travelling 6000 km to trenches near Tonga to have her babies, and her son, Elvis, and his journey all the way back.  The kids and parents were surprised at all the changes that have happened in New Zealand’s waterways since Velvet was a baby eel, an elver, swimming upstream.  In addition to the huge increase in fishing and pollution and dams, the parents were shocked to know that the country has lost 90% of it’s wetlands… vital habitat for the mauri of the wai  (ecological and spiritual life of the water).
