Giant Sea Bass Conservation

Move over Megalodon . . . There’s a real, mysterious giant living in the Sea of Cortez and they need your help!

Giant Sea Bass Conservation

The critically endangered Giant Sea Bass (Stereolepis gigas) can still be found in some California waters where they are protected but they’ve long been thought to have been extirpated (made locally extinct) in the Sea of Cortez. Our partner, Dr. Arturo Ramirez, PhD, from Scripps Institute of Oceanography and the University of Baja recently made the exciting discovery that, they ARE still here and caught by local fishermen. With your support we can work with Arturo’s Mero Gigante team to study these little-understood, 550 lb. gentle giants and help them get protection in Mexico before they too become a myth from the past.
